THE LANDSCAPE MARKETING INDEX

How the Landscape Marketing Index
Is Built

The LMI shows what landscape companies actually pay to get leads, and what those leads turn into. Every number comes from real ad accounts and real lead records. We don’t use surveys or guesses.

WHO’S INCLUDED

Who’s in the Index

We review every company one at a time before it goes in. They’re all Intrigue Media clients. We don’t buy data or borrow it from partners or associations.

INCLUDED

Design, Build and Maintenance Companies

Landscape architects and designers count too, even if they sub out their build work, because most of them install as well.

Design

Construction

Maintenance

NOT INCLUDED, FOR NOW

One-Trade Companies

Snow-only, irrigation-only and lighting-only businesses aren’t in the main numbers. That’s not because they don’t matter. They may get their own sections in future reports.

Snow Only

Irrigation Only

Lighting Only

NOT INCLUDED

Garden Centres and Supply Yards

Their counter sales get mixed in with project work and there’s no way to separate them, so they’re left out even if they also install. One supply yard alone logged nearly 30,000 sales.

NOT INCLUDED

Businesses Outside Landscaping

Intrigue has worked with clients in other industries over the years. They’re filtered out.

DATA SOURCES

Where the Numbers Come From

Everything is pulled straight from live ad accounts and lead tracking. We don’t estimate or model anything.

  • Google Ads
What was spent, how many people clicked and how many leads came in, by campaign
  • SALT (our lead tracking tool)
Where each lead came from, whether it was quotable, and what it was quoted and sold for
  • Local Service Ads
What Google Guaranteed ads cost and how they did compared to regular Google Ads
  • Google Search Console and GA4
How companies show up in search, how many people visit their sites and how many of those visitors reach out

REPORT SCHEDULE

Four Reports a Year

Each one comes out about 60 days after the period ends.

Lead numbers (how many leads, what they cost, how many were quotable and which channels they came from) cover the period that just ended.

Dollar numbers (quote value, sale value, job size and close rate) look back one year. Quotes and sales often get logged weeks or months after the first call, so we give them time to come in.

RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL

Residential vs. Commercial

The ad numbers and the lead numbers cover different kinds of work, so read them a little differently.

Read ad numbers as residential and lead numbers as a mix of both.

Ad numbers are residential only. Residential and commercial ads run as separate campaigns, so they’re easy to keep apart

Lead numbers include everything. About 45% of these companies also do commercial work, and the lead records don’t say which is which

Commercial ad numbers are coming. We track them, but there isn’t enough data to publish yet

DATA HANDLING

How We Handle the Data

GEOGRAPHY

Only US & Canada Leads

Leads from outside both countries are removed. Leads with no country listed stay in, since they’re quotable more often than average.

MISSING DATA

Gaps Are Never Filled In

If a company didn’t record a number, we don’t guess it. We leave them out of that calculation and say so.

OUTLIERS

Odd Numbers Get Reviewed

If a number looks way off for a company, someone who knows that account checks it. Nothing is deleted automatically.

SAMPLE SIZE

Small Samples Get Flagged

If a figure is based on only a few companies or leads, we point that out right next to the number.

CURRENCY

Dollars Aren’t Converted

US and Canadian dollars are added together with no exchange rate. About 83% of quote dollars come from US companies.

REVISIONS

Past Numbers Get Updated

Each report reruns past periods with the latest data, so older numbers can shift a little as late quotes come in.

LIMITATIONS

What to Keep in Mind Before You Compare

Read these first. The ones at the top matter most.

  • These are all Intrigue clients
Every company here chose to hire a marketing agency and stuck with it. The LMI shows what’s possible with professional help, not what the average landscape company gets
  • The group keeps growing
New companies join over time, so a bigger total doesn’t mean the industry grew. That’s why we publish rates and averages instead of totals
  • Dollar amounts are entered by hand
Only about half of companies log their quote values. Focus on the patterns and comparisons more than exact dollar figures
  • Recent dollar numbers aren’t complete yet
Quotes and sales get logged late, so dollar figures are published a year behind
  • “Quotable” is decided in different ways
Some companies mark their own leads. Others use automatic keyword rules

DEFINITIONS

What the Terms Mean

The exact rules behind each number, so you can compare your own fairly.

Any call, web form, text, email or chat that lead tracking records. Repeat contacts count too, because a past customer coming back through an ad or a search is still a lead. Completed counter sales don’t count.

The rate counts each person only once, so a repeat customer isn’t counted again as a new lead that went nowhere. Total lead counts include repeat contacts. The two are counted differently on purpose, so dividing one published number by the other won’t match the rate.

A lead is quotable when the landscape company, or automation that scans for buying signals, marks it as worth quoting. The automation only ever marks a yes, so a lead with no mark was checked and counted as not quotable, which keeps the benchmark on the cautious side. Some companies only mark a lead quotable once it becomes an opportunity in their CRM.

Averages are simple averages. If one big job pulls a monthly average up, we say how much of it came from that one job. Rates are worked out across everyone combined, so cost per lead is total spend divided by total leads. We don’t average each company’s own rate, because that would give a small advertiser the same weight as a big one.

Paid search, Performance Max, Local Service Ads, Google organic, Google Business Profile, direct, other search engines, social, AI assistants and referrals. These cover about 92% of inquiries. The rest is reported as one combined number, because breaking it out would identify individual companies.

It isn’t split. Each lead is credited to the channel the tracking recorded when it came in. That means AI assistants are undercounted: if someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation and then searches the company by name, it shows up as organic search. Word-of-mouth referrals don’t show up at all.

Those totals describe how big Intrigue’s client list is, not how the market is doing, and they’d change every time a client joined. That’s why we only give a rough company count. We do publish inquiry and quoted-work totals, because they show how much data sits behind each rate.

Not directly. Reports before Q3 2026 counted repeat contacts in the qualification rate and didn’t remove inquiries from outside the US and Canada. These rules apply from the Q3 2026 report on.
